01-08 National Report Reveals 1 in 10 Adults Experienced Serious Psychological Distress Last Year

An estimated 24.3 million people aged 18 years or older experienced serious psychological distress (SPD) in the past year – and only 44.6 percent of them received any kind of mental health services, according to a report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). 01-06  NIDA Releases New Report on Co-morbidity of Addiction and Other Mental Illnesses

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) this week released a research report, Co-morbidity: Addiction and Other Mental Illnesses, summarizing the state of the science regarding the complex relationship between substance abuse and other mental disorders. The release of this report is timely given the increasing prevalence and link between post traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse. News Release

09-05 Report Shows Many Kids May Have Emotional Troubles

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention released new report that reveals the range of emotional and behavioral and mental health problems facing American children aged 4 - 17. The report reveals that 15% of parents had discussed their children's difficulties with a healthcare provider or school staff.

09-05 Mental Disorders High in Young Offender Institutions

A study conducted by Oxford University and published in the current issue of Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry showed that girls in young offender institutions are especially vulnerable to depression. Incidence of mental health problems in boys and girls was many times greater in detention centers around the world than in the general population.

09-04  Providers Could Help Prevent Suicides

According to Guns and Suicide in the United States, an article released today in the New England Journal of Medicine, providers who care for suicidal patients should be able to assess whether their client has access to a firearm or other lethal means and work with patients and families to limit access to those means. Among Americans, guns are used in more than half of all completed suicides. The Harvard Injury Control Research Center website provides guidance for providers.

09-03  Australian Candidate Promises Minister for Mental Health

Colin Barnett, running for the Liberal party, is making big promises to change the way mental health is viewed in Western Australia by promising to appoint the first minister for mental health and an independent mental health and well being commissioner in addition to pledging $13 million to develop a suicide prevention strategy. 09-02  Help NAMI Grade The States

The The National Alliance on Mental Illness is inviting the public to help grade each of the 50 states on mental health services by providing an online survey to voice your opinion. It is available in English and Spanish. The next report card will come out in 2009. Take the survey before September 30.

08-13  Psychiatric Analysis vs Medication

According to an article in the current issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, psychotherapy visits declined from 1996 to 2005. The change coincided with changes in reimbursement, increases in managed care, and growth in medication prescriptions.
