Products & Reports: Consumer Interview Project

During its first year, the Mental Health Transformation Project (MHTP) was responsible for conducting consumer interviews and focus groups. The Project contracted with the Washington Institute for Mental Illness Research and Training (WIMIRT), and the University of Washington Division of Public Behavioral Health and Justice Policy (DPBHJP) to conduct in-person and telephone interviews as part of the Needs Assessment and Resource Inventory. From April into June, 2006, WIMIRT and DPBHJP completed the In-Depth Youth, Family member, and Consumer Interview Project which was presented to the Transformation Work Group (TWG) on June 16.

The Interview Project gathered perspectives from consumers of mental health services about the current state of the mental health systems and needed improvements. All interviewers trained and employed in the project were current and former consumers, or family members. The goal of the interviews and subsequent data, was to inform planning and program development and ultimately to improve the quality of mental health services delivered in Washington. At the completion of the interviews, data was analyzed and produced the following common themes:

  • Access to care
  • Having choices
  • Need for service integration and coordination
  • Help with co-occuring disorders
  • The presence of stigma
  • Need someone to listen

The completed report appears as Chapters 3 and 4 of the Resource Inventory Needs Assessment [Portable Document Format 4MB].

The final Mental Health Transformation Plan Phase I (formerly the Draft Comprehensive Mental Health Plan) is available on the Priority Reports page of this website.
